6 Facts about the Six Nations

6 Facts about the Six Nations

17th Mar 2023

Since we’ve come to the end of the Six Nations Championship, we thought it’d be fun to take a look at six facts about the tournament that you might not know.

Although, being honest, we do have an ulterior motive…

You see, one of the facts is a subtle plug!

Let me know if you can figure out which one it is.

1. 50% of the nations wear Macron

(Okay, maybe it wasn’t that subtle…)

Scotland, Wales, and Italy are all dressed for their best in Macron kits! You can pick up a Macron kit of your own here.

And as a bonus (somewhat related) fact, four teams from the Premiership Rugby also wear Macron kits. Do you know which four?

2. The most expensive champagne glass ever?

A new trophy for the tournament was commissioned in 2015 due to erosion on the £55,000-insured piece of silverware. But, what caused this erosion you may ask…

Champagne-soaked celebrations from the winning teams, of course!

The new trophy also has the added precaution of a 22-carat gold plating and lipped lid to try and prevent the same from happening (another bonus fact, it can hold about 5 bottles of champagne).

3. What can 270 silver rupees get you today?

On the subject of silverware, another with an interesting story behind it is the Calcutta Cup, the oldest trophy in international rugby.

It was given to the RFU by the Calcutta Football Club shortly before it was disbanded due to the club’s free bar closing down in 1878. But here’s the interesting part…

The cup was made from melting down the 270 silver rupees the club had left over. Today, that’d be worth around £65,000!

4. It’s older than the World Cup!

Sorry football fans, but rugby takes it for this one. The tournament pre-dates the World Cup by a hefty 47 years.

5. Scotland is leading the way this year…

25 million pints were served across the UK during the last Six Nations fixtures – around 7% more than during those same matches last year.

And while Ireland may top the table right now (and despite my best efforts here in Gloucester), it was Scotland who were victorious in most pints sold. Each Scottish venue saw an average uplift of 210 pints across the board.

6. Four… Five… Six… Seven?

The Six Nations started out as the Home Nations with just the four teams from the UK.

France joined in 1910. Italy joined in 2000, the sixth nation. And now there’s even talk of South Africa joining as soon as 2025!

So, there you have it.

Six facts for the Six Nations.
